affordable art: photography

AFFORDABLE ART

Our Affordable Art series was created to help you express yourself through your walls. Our definition of affordable is anything under £150 and each article aims to highlight independent artists and galleries.

While the first article focused on the basics, like how to set up a gallery wall, we’re now going to dedicate each article to a category of art, and this one is all about photography.

good to know

When it comes to buying a piece of photography there are two main types of prints to choose from: photographic prints and fine art prints. While both are high quality reproductions of images, photographic prints are usually printed on photo paper (be that glossy or matte) using a digital printer. Fine art prints, by contrast, are printed using archival inks on fine art acid-free paper.

Fine art prints are more expensive than photographic prints because of its specialist materials and printing process.  The main benefits of choosing fine art prints over photographic prints are; they are designed to last (without fading) and they enable a wider range of colours (which allows for subtle colour gradients).

lucy laucht

Lucy is a travel and lifestyle photographer. In a single picture you’re transported to the places she’s visited, overlooking a shimmering sea with the sun on your back and suncream in the air. The moments she captures are candid and natural with a warm inviting tone. And every scene offers an insight into the feeling of each place and those who call it home. Devoted to natural light and shot on film, Lucy’s pictures feel beautifully raw, expect to see perfect imperfections and a little grain. If you’re partial to nostalgia, people watching or a Campari soda, you’ll appreciate Lucy Laucht’s photography.

henri prestes

Henri is a fine-art photographer, meaning he uses photography to convey story. Set at night, Henri’s work uses dramatic lighting and saturated colour palettes. Each scene is punctuated by mysterious figures, obscured from view. This combination results in atmospheric photographs that are equal parts ominous and calming, as if the viewer is being invited to dive into another person’s memory or dream. If you like enchanted stories, melancholy music or obsesses over cinematography, you’ll appreciate Herni Prestes’ work.

Ludwig Favre

Ludwig is a landscape and architecture photographer. Born in Paris, but spending the majority of his time road-tripping through America, Ludwig elevates even the most ordinary landmarks to create a surreal, almost perfect, dream-like scene. His photographs are characterised by carefully considered composition and pastel colour palette. If you love pastels, Wes Anderson or have a soft spot for Americana, you’ll appreciate Ludwig Favre’s work.

max olson

Max is an outdoor and landscape photographer. In his work he aims to seek out places where nature is thriving against a backdrop of man-made spaces; this could be a city park, regional park or national park. Max finds joy in celebrating the nature still available to us, trying to document the world in a optimistic way, as proof that there’s plenty left to fight for, even though our existence can feel at odds with the natural world. His work is rugged, rich and raw. If you crave ‘big nature’, feel at peace when hiking or believe there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes, you’ll appreciate a piece by Max Olson.

ana santl

Ana is an interior and lifestyle photographer. In her work, Ana aims to translate environments into kind and clam images in order to invite the viewer to rest and daydream. Ana created a series of photographs with The Poster Club called The Summer Memores collection. Unlike her commercial work, this series was shot on analogue film. Compared to fast paced digital photography, alonogue film creates natural moments of pause, enabling Anna to better capture fleeting moments and treasured memories. If you gravitate towards calming, warm tones and love pouring over architectural magazines you’ll appreciate Ana Santl’s work.

Honourable Mention,
Andoni Beristain

While Andoni’s work falls outside of our predefined £150 price range, we’re big fans of his work and wanted to include him as part of our Affordable Art series. We just wanted to include a price disclaimer to avoid any disappointment.

Andoni is a photographer, art director and graphic designer. He’s always been fascinated with shapes and colours, which you’ll see throughout his work. He creates large scale still-life scenes, but his choice of subjects and props create a sense of play and optimism, not usually associated with the still-life category. If you romanticise the everyday, love a bold aesthetic and see a sense of humour as an important personality trait, you’ll appreciate Andoni Beristain’s work.
